WaterpikTM Water Flosser with Precision Tip Statistically Significantly More Effective at Improving Oral Health than the Phillips Sonicare Power Flosser with Quad Tip At Four Weeks
Comparison of two water flossers with different tip designs on the reduction of gingival inflammation, bleeding, and plaque: A 4-week randomized controlled clinical trial.
Objective
To compare the effectiveness of a manual toothbrush paired with either a WaterpikTM water flosser with the Precision Tip or a Phillips Sonicare Power Flosser with a Quad Stream Tip on the reduction of plaque, bleeding, and gingivitis.
Methodology
Seventy subjects were randomized into two groups in this 4-week, single-blind, parallel clinical trial. Both groups used a manual toothbrush. Group 1 added a WaterpikTM water flosser with the Precision Tip and Group 2 added a Phillips Sonicare Power Flosser with the Quad Stream Tip. The participants could not use any additional interdental products or mouthrinses. All subjects were instructed to brush for 2 minutes and use their assigned device for one minute. All were giving written and verbal instructions. Bleeding, gingivitis, and plaque were measured at baseline, 2-weeks, and 4-weeks. Indices used were Bleeding on Probing (BOP), Modified Gingival Index (MGI) and the Rustogi Modified Navy Plaque Index (RMNPI). Statistical analysis included paired t-tests, two-treatment ANOVA, Wilcoxon and Fisher’s Exact Test.
Results
Both groups showed a statistically significant improvement from baseline for all indices. At 4-weeks, the WaterpikTM water flosser with the Precision Tip was superior to the Phillips Sonicare Power Flosser at reducing bleeding, gingivitis and plaque.
Conclusion
The WaterpikTM water flosser with the Precision Tip was significantly more effective than the Phillips Sonicare Power Flosser with the Quad Stream Tip at reducing plaque, bleeding, and gingivitis. This study provides strong evidence that the novel Quad Stream Tip does not provide a clinical advantage compared to the Precision Tip.
